In January 2006, Phish performed "Free" live in Brooklyn as part of their "Live in Brooklyn" album. This recording marked an important moment in the band's career as it followed their hiatus from 2004 to 2009, during which they took time to pursue individual projects. The band had released their studio album "Farmhouse" in 2000, which was well-received and helped them secure their place in the jam band scene. The live recording showcases the band's signature improvisational style, capturing the energy and unique chemistry they often displayed during performances. Additionally, the fact that the recording was produced by Rhino Entertainment reflects the band's enduring popularity and the demand for high-quality live recordings among their dedicated fan base. The performance highlights not only Phish's technical musicianship but also their ability to create a unique atmosphere during live events.

In June 2006, Phish was on hiatus from live performances, having disbanded in 2004. During this period, the band's guitarist and vocalist, Trey Anastasio, was involved in various side projects, one of which was the supergroup Oysterhead. Formed in 2000, Oysterhead consists of Anastasio, Les Claypool from Primus, and Stewart Copeland of The Police. Their performance at the Bonnaroo Festival in 2006 marked one of their rare live appearances. Just prior to the Bonnaroo show, Phish had released their album "Round Room" in 2002, and the band began making plans for a reunion soon after this performance. The Bonnaroo set featured a mix of eclectic songs, showcasing the unique blend of styles from the members' diverse backgrounds, and contributed to the anticipation of Phish's eventual return to the stage in 2009.
